Announcing Docker Birthday #3

Feb 3 2016

Back in March 2013, Docker’s CTO and Founder, Solomon Hykes introduced Docker publicly for the first time during a lightning talk at PyCon. Three years later the Docker project has significantly matured to become the open platform of choice for building, shipping and running distributed applications in an infrastructure agnostic Container as a Service (CaaS) model. Thanks to the hard work of thousands of contributors from Docker, Inc and the Docker community, the Docker platform is now used in production by companies of all sizes and industries.

Last year, to celebrate the Docker project’s 2nd birthday, we proudly organized a global open-source-a-thon where the Docker core team and expert developers from the Go community guided participants through their first open source contributions which resulted in donation to the Oceanic Society and its mission to conserve the habitat of Moby Dock and blue whales across the planet.

This year, to celebrate the Docker Project’s 3rd birthday, the Docker community is joining forces with a number of partners in the broader tech and open-source community to host a series of events focused on providing Docker training to beginners during the week of March 21-26.

Based on the feedback we’ve received from Docker meetup organizers, we learned that many meetup attendees are new to Docker and we want to make sure that we welcome them warmly into the Docker community. To ensure that these events are inclusive for everyone attending including underrepresented minorities, we’re happy to announce that we have teamed up with the following partners who’re actively contributing to organizing many Docker Birthday celebrations around the world!

We’d be happy to work with more partners on a global level or connect you with the local Docker meetup organizer for a local partnership. If you’re part of a community groups for a specific programming language, open source software projects, CS students at local universities, coding institutions or Non-profit organizations promoting diversity in the larger tech community, please email us at [email protected] for more information!

New to Docker ?

Learn how to build, ship, and run distributed apps with Docker

Without revealing too many details at this points, participants in the training will go through the steps involved in running and developing a simple voting app from a fresh computer using Docker Toolbox and Compose. This simple app will include:

• A Python webapp which lets you vote between several options
• A Redis queue which collects new votes
• A Java worker which consumes votes and stores them in…
• …A Postgres database backed by a Docker volume
• A Node.js webapp which shows the results of the voting in real timedocker-toolbox

There will be a self-paced beginners’ tutorial for attendees to learn Docker basics as they build and deploy this app locally. Experienced Docker users will serve as mentors to help beginners successfully complete the training.

Are you an advanced Docker user?

docker_training_bday3 We are recruiting a network of mentors to help guide beginners through this Docker Birthday App tutorial and challenge. Mentors will attend the local events to help answer questions attendees may have while completing the self-paced training. Docker will share with mentors the training components before the birthday celebrations.

Mentors should have experience working with Docker Engine, Docker Networking, Docker Hub, Docker Machine, Docker Swarm and Docker Compose. Click here to sign up as a mentor.
